    HLW St. Veit – A Future-Oriented Education

With its two streams – EcoBusiness and International Management – the VOCATIONAL SCHOOL OF COMMERCE AND TOURISM in St. Veit, Austria, offers its approximately 500 students a wide range of education and training for future university studies or employment.

One Year Course in Commerce: This prepares the pupils for any traineeship and is a valuable alternative to the compulsory ninth year of schooling.

Three Year Course in Office Management and Tourism: An attractive and modern syllabus and the currently introduced specialised job-training prepares the ground for a successful future career.

Five Year Course in Commerce and Tourism: The main aspects of this course are
    – EcoBusiness (Environmental Studies)
    – International Management (with a third foreign language – English, French, Italian, Spanish optional and English as a Working Language)

Additional qualifications include the Cambridge Business English Certificate (BEC), the French Exam of the Parisian Chamber of Commerce, the Certificate of Commercial Italian (CLIDA) and the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).

Central to all three streams in our school is highly specialised instruction in catering, provided by our committed team of teachers, who have been able to raise standards enormously. Ten teachers are responsible for cookery, waiting and nutrition. Of these ten, two are accredited sommeliers, one is a cheese and three are wine experts. In lessons the emphasis is placed on Austrian hospitality and gastronomic expertise.
Modern facilities such as state-of-the-art kitchens, dining rooms, a wine cellar and a bar provide an optimal learning experience for the students.
Moreover we are offering a „young sommeliers‘ course“ – the first in Carinthia. The curriculum includes subjects like Drinks-Management, Wine-Making, Wine-Regions in Austria and Europe, Wine-Tasting, Wine-Presentation, preparation of International Cuisine and cocktails and General Hotel Management.
But what we are most proud of is the mandatory three months‘ of work experience, which our students undertake in some of Europe’s leading hotels such as the Grand Hotel in Brighton, the Hilton in Paris and Cannes, the Brandon Hotel in Tralee, the Ducchi d’Aosta in Trieste or the Las Dunas at the Spanish Costa Brava. This new type of placement is supported by the European Union’s Leonardo Project.

In recognition of the high level of academic standards AND the quality of our practical training the Ministry of Education in Vienna awarded us a special Certificate of Achievement, making us the only school of our kind to receive this accolade. In a recently compiled national ranking of schools published in the most widely read Austrian news magazine NEWS, our school was rated first in our province, Carinthia
